Born of violence (movement piece)
EXPERIMENTAL DANCE / 2022 / 2 MINUTES / SHORT FILM / 1080P / 25FPS / STEREO / UNITED KINGDOM
Synopsis:
What is it like coming to terms with the violent nature of your own conception? In this deeply personal short, a child conceived through sexual violence is entangled in a bittersweet dance of acceptance and rejection with his mother.
Born of Violence explores a complex question with sensitivity, drawing intimately on the experience of the film maker, who was himself conceived from rape. The dance depicts the inescapable traumas experienced by both mother and child, and a yearning to find resolve from hidden grief.
These themes are powerfully and humanely portrayed by performers Ezi Ogbonna and Modest Mulenga, bringing to life the visceral choreography of Lea Oroz. ‘Born Of Violence’ is shot on 35mm, with cinematography by Miles Ridgway.
This project intends to raise awareness around a global campaign to secure more rights for children born from sexual violence, as well as a forthcoming documentary directed by McGoldrick on the subject matter.
